The John Wesley Church of England and Methodist Aided Primary School has a strong Christian ethos. The children are involved with the Ashford district of schools, the church community and the wider community. The school works very closely with two other local primary schools and periodically our pupils have the opportunity to mix socially and learn together with pupils from these two schools.
Religious Education is taught according to our school syllabus which develops a knowledge of Christianity whilst raising the awareness of other religions.
Regular school worship and Religious Education are very important parts of school life and all children are normally expected to participate.
As a church school we view worship as an important part of the school day.
There will be a daily act of worship in the school. In addition each week parents are cordially invited to take part in our Celebration Worship each Friday. Worship will reflect the traditions of the Christian belief, and this is interpreted in:
- A loving God through the life of Jesus
- The teachings of Jesus through his parables
- The meaning of Christian festivals
- Exemplary lives of prophets and saints
- The importance of Christian social action
- The value of love, patience, forgiveness, compassion, gentle and
The importance of moral action, responsibility and taking responsibility for our actions.
The John Wesley CEM Primary follows the Canterbury Diocesan Board’s guidelines on worship.
We respect the parent’s right to withdraw their child from religious worship and instruction. Please discuss this with the Headteacher should you wish to withdraw your child.
Church of England
Through being part of the family of denominations within St Mary’s Great Chart church, pupils gain a good understanding of diversity within the church including both Anglican and Methodist traditions. Both Anglican and Methodist traditions are promoted through singing and prayer, both of which pupils join in with enthusiasm.<
The Rev Canon Tim Wilson leds the team at St Mary’s, regularly leading collective worship assemblies and actively participating as a Foundation Governor at The John Wesley CEM Primary School.
As a warm and welcoming member of our school and wider community Tim is always happy to chat with any pupil, parent and member of staff by offering spiritual, emotional or pastoral support and help. The church website is: www.stmarysgreatchart.org/
The South Kent Methodist Circuit
The John Wesley Church of England Methodist Aided Primary School has a strong affiliation with the South
Kent Methodist Circuit which was formed in 2011 and covers the political regions of Ashford and Shepway. As such, the circuit includes 19 churches from Headcorn in the North-West to Lydd in the South and Charing in the North. The nearest Methodist church to the school is Cade Road.
Whilst the superintendent Minister for the school is Rev. Sam Funnell the pastoral and operational support is given by Rev. Dr. Phillip Luscombe who is both a foundation governor at the school and leads worship several times a year. He is also supported in this latter role by the United Reformed Minister, Rev Paul Dean. Please visit www.southkentmethodistcircuit.org.uk/about-us/our-ministers/ for additional information.
