John Wesley Year 5 and 6 came close to an impressive upset against highly lauded Kingsnorth Primary School.
In a very tight game, it was the hosts who scored first, a brilliant team move started by Ben who powered through from midfield and set up Bradley who was able to lob the Kingsnorth goal keeper. John Wesley played with discipline and organisation, frequently taking the game to the opposition and playing well in defence.
A mistimed challenge in the penalty area saw Kingsnorth awarded a penalty, although Connor stepped up marvellously and pulled off a wonderful save, which was the highlight of his brave and professional performance.
Kingsnorth did eventually equalise as a lapse in concentration allowed a striker through on goal, and Connor was unable to stop a well-placed shot. A confused and disorganised minute from John Wesley eventually allowed a goal mouth scramble to be put in from a blocked shot, as John Wesley found themselves behind.
Numerous chances and fast paced football followed. It was a great spectacle for a neutral, as both John Wesley and Kingsnorth played end to end football. John Wesley were unlucky to capitalise on a number of chances, and ultimately, Kingsnorth held to win 2-1. John Wesley will be sure to rue their missed chances, and will be keen not to repeat their mistakes in their next game. The wise words of Mr Elgar will be echoing around the pitch next time : ‘Finish your dinner!’
Chances missed aside, John Wesley have a lot to be proud of, as they are showing grit and determination, and are unwilling to let themselves be beaten until the final whistle. Special mentions should go to the two new additions to the team, Bradley and William from Year 5, who stepped up and both had marvellous performances.
Well done John Wesley!
