Two teams of John Wesley Year 3 and 4 went to represent the school at the Ashford and District handball tournament held at Highworth School.

For many of the children, this was their first time representing the school, although it was hard to tell, as both teams stormed their groups. Team One managed to win all games in their group whilst Team Two were unlucky to lose two but managed to win the rest.

As fate would have it, Team One won their group and Team Two came runners up, meaning that both teams played each other in the quarter final stage. Despite being the less experienced side, Team Two came out on top as they scored the first goal in a 1-1 draw.

Having got through to the semi-final, Team Two were given the unenviable task of taking on a strong Furley Park team, who traditionally dominate school festivals. Nonetheless, John Wesley rose to the challenge, playing quick, ferocious handball with a real desire to win being shown. An early goal for John Wesley was ruled out due to reasons unknown. Despite the setback, John Wesley continued to press and came extremely close to scoring many times. However, some tough and physical play from Furley Park eventually led to them scoring in dubious circumstances, and it was this goal which was to be the decider.

Despite their unfortunate and perhaps undeserved exit from the semi-final, John Wesley return to school with their heads held high in the knowledge that they came 4th and 6th in a first showing for many taking part.

Thanks to Mr Hobby and Mr Elgar for super training sessions!
