Design & Technology
Year 5 have been making Superhero Masks!
Intent
At The John Wesley CEM Primary School, we teach Design and Technology in an inspiring and practical way. Through our connected curriculum, children relate their activities in Design and Technology to their learning in other subjects. This link really motivates them to see the relevance of problems and to design and make solutions. We give children the opportunity to progressively develop their knowledge and skills, designing and making increasingly complex products throughout their school journey. Through their experience of Design and Technology, children learn to take risks, try different approaches and evaluate their work. The skills and knowledge children develop enable them to participate in an increasingly technological world.
Implementation
Children’s work gives them the opportunity to explore the three main stages of the design process; design, make and evaluate. These are underpinned by the teaching of technical knowledge, which gives children the opportunity to develop their understanding and apply the skills they have learnt. Children are also taught how to cook and apply the principles of nutrition and healthy eating.
Through their learning in Design and Technology children:
• Develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world
• Build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users
• Critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others
• Understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook
We take every opportunity to develop links with outside agencies and experts, in order to enrich our Design and Technology provision.
Impact
Our children are proud of the products they design, make and evaluate. They enjoy learning technical knowledge and refining their skills. By the end of their primary school journey, children will have designed, made and evaluated a wide range of products, linked to their learning in other subjects. They will have also learnt to prepare different dishes, thinking about their nutritional content. Through their study of Design and Technology children learn to take risks, try different approaches and refine their ideas. The skills learnt enable children to become creative, innovative and resourceful individuals, ready to engage with and develop technology.
