Social, Emotional & Mental Health (including ADHD)

Children and young people may experience a wide range of social and emotional difficulties which manifest themselves in many ways. These may include becoming withdrawn or isolated, as well as displaying challenging, disruptive or disturbing behaviour. These behaviours may reflect underlying mental health difficulties... Other children and young people may have disorders such as attention deficit disorder, attention deficit hyperactive disorder or attachment disorder.

(SEN Code of Practice, January 2015)

At The John Wesley CEM Primary School, the staff have completed a range of training to help meet the social and emotional needs of our children, this includes:

  • Emotion coaching
  • De-escalation strategies
  • Boxall - social and emotional assessment of need
  • Nurture UK training - See Nurture page for further information
  • Adverse Childhood Experiences and Trauma

Zones of Regulation are displayed in every classroom and around the school to teach children about how to name and regulate their feelings.  We teach children that ALL feeling are OK, it is how you manage them that is the important factor.  Please see the PDF below of the four different Zones of Regulation.

ELSA

We have an Emotional Literacy Support Assistant called Mrs Wickens who is able to work with children on a 1:1 basis or small group situation to support building relationships, strategies to manage worries and anger, self regulation strategies and many more things.

Drawing, Talking and Sandplay

We are very fortunate to have a Drawing, Talking and Sandplay practitioner, Mrs Hanks who enjoys working with children on a 1:1 basis for 12 sessions.  This is a gentle, non-intrusive method of working with children who need a little help to support their social and emotional wellbeing.
